ANother potential suitor for data com company is Alcatel. The company got a few billions in June when they introduced Alstom in London/Paris/ New York (with GEC from Britain). Tchuruk (Chairman) specifically mentioned during the annual meeting held in June that the money will not be used for stock repurchase but 'among other things aquisition' (quote from memory) I do not personally believe that Ericsson, Siemens, Lucent or Alcatel would be interested in 3Com, too expensive for the synergies. But, who future will tell us.

According to Smith Barney, Eric B. was in the NY area over the last few days for an ANALyst meeting. There was NO MERGER TALKS discussed. Eric B. was singing the same tune of "turning the corner". It seems that people are finally believing him! As for INTC buying COM$, makes absolutely no sense. There is no synergy there, which one would believe that you need in a merger. Put it this way, if people were spooked over the COM$/USRX merger, they'll be traumatized by this one! I still believe COM$ will make it on its own. Their has been a lot of talk about COM$ buying companies, such as ADAPTEC, I'm not sure that's a good one, but I'd like to be on the buying end instead of the buyee IMO of course.
