Sonki, one word for that article: sensationalism. He titles it "Is Merced Doomed", and then goes on to say that Merced architecture will live and prosper in what I will call Son of Merced (McKinley), no matter what happens to Merced.

I do know that the whole world is waiting for Merced, or its successor. 64 bit NT, Solaris, SCO Unix, HP UX and many other 64 bit OS's on Intel hardware is a computer or server company's dream. It's going to be very powerful and cheap, in comparison to anything else around at the time. If for no other reason, you know it's got to be good or Scott McNealy would not be committing resources to get Sun Solaris working on it. It makes him a working partner with Intel, and sort of with Microsoft. Unheard of.

Some of the Xeon problems have (further) made me wake up to the realization that Intel is getting into a whole new ball game, though. They are "graduating" from the complexity of the PC world to that of the mainframe. The cost of development and verification to Intel just went up. Their slipping the Merced schedule a few months ago, because of "program management" difficulties, also hints that they're moving up into another higher level of complexity.

I think they'll make it though, and I can't think of a better high tech stock to be in for the long haul.
