" the facts that the 233 mhz chip is almost a year-old and thus easily
available..."

233MHz PowerPC 750 were priced at $395 when they were introduced back on Aug of 97. The price on these PowerPC chips generally drop by about $50 per month after intro. Since the 233 has been out for 12 months..lets see.

$395 - (12X $50) = -$205
So I guess Motorola and IBM pays Apple $205 per chip. I think we found a new source of revenue!
Now seriously, my point is the PPC 750/233 should be dirt cheap by now. The price drop over time is obviously not linear-- more like a sigmoidal curve with the steepest drop a few months after intro and slowly leveling off.

With the volume discount Apple gets I would guess that Apple pays less than $100 per chip for 233MHz PPC 750s.
