SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1998 AUG 12 (NB) -- By Bob Woods,
Newsbytes. Internet search and portal concern Infoseek Corp.
[NASDAQ:SEEK] will buy something that creeps and crawls, but it is
definitely not a snake or spider. Infoseek said it signed an agreement
to buy privately-held Quando Inc., a company that develops software
that "crawls" the World Wide to build directories, for about $17
million in Infoseek common stock.

With its crawling technology, Portland, Ore.-based Quando creates and
licenses constantly-updated customized directories, including shopping
guides, event guides, contact directories, audio clip libraries, review
guides, and data for Web site rating guides.

Infoseek will use the acquisition to go beyond Internet searching
and categorizing to enter the world of e-commerce, company officials
said. "E-commerce is a huge opportunity and key to our portal strategy,"
said Harry Motro, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of
Infoseek. "Services that give consumers the comparative information they
need will change the spending habits of the Internet consumer and set a
new standard for comparative shopping."

The buy will also let Infoseek offer localized content, such as events
information, extensive venue information and business contacts, for
its users.

Quando's services will be integrated into Infoseek's Web site in the
fourth calendar quarter of this year, company officials said.

Infoseek's Quando deal, announced late Tuesday, came on the a very busy
day for Internet portal concerns: Lycos announced that it was putting
Yahoo in its sites with the acquisition of WhoWhere, and Netscape
Communications signed a major deal with Citibank for the international
banking concern to be the sponsor of Netscape's Netcenter Personal
Finance Channel (Newsbytes, Aug. 11, 1998).

Quando's Web site is at quando.com .

Infoseek's site is located at infoseek.com .
