Gigabit Link Extenders Drive Digital Data Up to 120 Km

Company Press Release

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1998--Finisar's new FLX-2000 can extend Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet or ATM links, typically 50 meters in length, up to 120 Km.

According to the announcement by Patrick Wong, marketing manager, the FLX-2000 family of Gigabit-rate link extenders convert multi-mode fiber or copper connections to long-distance single-mode fiber connections that can reach 120 Km.

''Finisar is able to extend links well beyond the standard limits by leveraging our expertise with optics and using an innovative Digital Signal Conditioner,'' explained Wong. ''The FLX-2000 products facilitate new applications such as remote storage, disaster recovery, extended campus LANs and Gigabit-rate data services.''

The internal Digital Signal Conditioner re-times the signal over the long-haul connection to reduce jitter. Data integrity is preserved over long distances with a bit-error-rate less than 10-12.

''There is tremendous growth for Gigabit-rate data services in UK and Europe. The major service providers and Telcos are already installing ATM (155/622 Mbps), Fibre Channel (1062 Mbps) and Gigabit Ethernet (1.25 Gbps) links between customer sites, and the future is set for an explosion in the markets,'' declared Phillip Coombes, sales director of Fibre Technologies Ltd. FTL is a leading fiber optic specialist distributor in the UK.

Simple to install, FLX-2000 link extenders include LEDs to indicate status of the system, short-haul link and long-haul link. FLX-2000 also includes comprehensive system status monitoring and link diagnostics. The link monitoring and diagnostics provide quick fault detection and isolation. Integration with network management is provided via an RS-232 serial port attached to a local terminal or modem to allow remote access. A redundant power supply (optional) increases reliability.

The FLX-2000 Fibre Channel 1.062 Gbps link extender is available today. Gigabit Ethernet 1.25 Gbps, ATM 155 Mbps and ATM 622 Mbps versions will be available in the fourth quarter. Pricing starts at $7,600.

Veritas adds a little mythical thunder:

<<The high-speed connectivity and switch-based architecture of SANs already provide some of the robustness necessary to support failover functionality.>>

<<Dataquest storage analyst Tom Lahive said improvements in SAN management are critical for IT managers to effectively oversee these networks. "It's a big issue to be able to ensure reliability amongst different devices. We believe the hardware for these networks will eventually become commoditized. The big key to IT managers is how they will be able to manage these," he said.>>

Customers have responded enthusiastically to new features such as the fibre-channel support in our latest offerings, particularly those products aimed at large data centers. Such technology enhances the expandability and ease-of-use of our higher-end servers in enterprise environments.

"We are also pleased this week to announce the release of our latest line of file servers, the F700 family of filers, which represents our fifth generation of advanced file-serving architecture. The F700 significantly enhances the price-performance value proposition of our product offerings."
