I believe Cede & Co holds shares that are in the street name for most brokerages.

I was just reading some info from Vicker's (the company that tracks institutional ownership) in their brochure they mention the following:

The largest single shareholder of record for many firms will often be "Cede & Co", the nominee name of the Depository Trust Corporation. The DTC will supply a Daily Position Report to every issuing firm whoser shares are currently held at the depository;
