When I joined Cisco at the Brussels Euro-Tac I was I think somewhere around the 39th engineer to be based in the Brussels Tac(Technical Assistance Centre), it has since grown to around 200 and I have to say the first two years have been the best of my career. However in the last year or so I have watched Cisco's pace slow and watch managers make cutbacks, cut corners and fail to attract the right breed of Internetworking Engineers. I felt that HR had an overpowering hold on power in Europe and as a purely technical people and non-sales oriented we(tech) were right at the bottom on the food chain.

Also with the explosive growth that the Euro-TAC had, managers were hastily promoted and the only noticeable criteria I saw was that they had to be technically the best in their field. This left little or no room for communicational or personal skills. I was also tired of the arrogance and purely egotistical attitude of some the employees at Cisco, I say some but it really was a lot. However at the end of the day it is high level management that really counts and I from what I have seen Cisco has some of the best. John Chambers has to be one of the best CEO's in the business.

I do still feel that Cisco is a fantastic company and for anyone to work there it is a real achievement, but I wanted to see the other side of the fence, I need to look at other companies and there technologies and products.

Cisco has a fantastic package of shares and bonuses and basic salaries. With the current stock prices there are a lot of very rich people at Cisco and for most people they have earned every cent. At the end of the day I made a decision to leave and after my break, Lucent was the number one choice.

Lucent is entering the data-networking arena and it is going to be an exciting prospect, they have the R&D, background and money to launch a decisive entry into this field that Cisco has dominated for so long.
