On the nyse site they have tables of all NYSE capitalizations,
as of 12/31/97 the total was 9+ trillion. nyse.com

Money supply growth is way down from what we had earlier in the year.

Whether this is conscious policy by the Fed or some slowdown in bank credit, it means less money for equities.
