However, analog video has significant drawbacks in terms of overall cost and efficiency of transmission, degradation of image quality over time and channels and accessibility for sorting, seaching, and editing. Digital video overcomes these limitations and enables a whole new class of applications. This is primarily due to the reduced cost of transmission and storage (6-10 times more video programs), interactivity (digital enables the use of media such as optical which are randomly accessible with negligible search times), and consistent image quality (digital video enables virtually exact reproduction). All of this is made possible by relatively new and complex compression techniques which allow large amounts of redundancies to be eliminated without affecting perceived image quality and also the adoption of standards which guarantee compatibility on an end-to-end basis even across different media. We are focused on enabling the mass transition of consumer audio-video equipment to digital processing. Innovations in algorithms and silicon compaction allow us to provide solutions for DVD and MPEG-2 based recording and playback application that set new standards in both quality and capability.
