I still remember my stay in Richmond Virginia in 1979. A couple of co-trainees where really surprised to learn that there was land above the 49th parallel not just a large body of water, the misconception was due to the way their news stations showed us on the weather maps.

Indeed... In Latin America, the same visitors would be surprised that people in larger cities actually wore suits, not the wide sombreros, white shortened pants/shirts and sarapes of the peasants from the Charros (singing cow-boys) movies.

I should mention that the promotion of such image by the local movie potentates, was motivated by the largely profitable results, in spite of the non-existent quality and repetitiveness of the plots, they were financial successes at the local box-office, in fact, they had the gall to even call the period during the 40's and early 50's the Golden Era of Latin American movie industry.

More incredible were the reported calls to travel agencies by the same "globe trotters" inquiring if passports were required when travelling to... New Mexico !!

Amazing what the power of TV and movies can exercise upon the masses who are willing to use such media as their only tool to keep up with the "news and events" of the world.

I shall speak VSE no more....

May you have warmth in your igloo, oil in your lamp, and peace in your heart.
