Thus far, the market tested the endurance of the bears. Weaker ones got assimilated either to the bull camp or left pennyless. The stronger ones remain in the battlefield. Given this, the bear population has gone down dramatically in the last year or so (not withstanding the record high NYSE and NASD record short-interest ratios.) Now, the conviction and endurance of the bulls is being tested. The big difference between October 97 and now is that, they have a "feel" for the bear now. Easier to get scared now than in Oct 97. JMO.
Every day around the close, there is a big question to be asked - what will tomorrow bring to the markets. If the answer is assuring, then there is no reason to sell. If there is a lot of uncertainity or problems all around, why risk one's life savings? Sell. Sell. Sell.
