Brinker and Emerging Markets

This is hilarious. Money talk just wouldn't be Money Talk without entertaining SPIN like this.

Brinker recently recommended sale of Montgomery Emerging Markets. This fund had been an underperformer for quite some time, but Brinker would never admit it. He used to dismiss claims of underperformance by saying Emerging Markets was purely an asset allocation play and he only had a 5% weighting in the model portfolios. He would add that a 50% loss on 5% of your equity allocation is insignificant in your overall return.

But wait. Something all of a sudden changed. As of the July issue of Marketimer, Brinker now has concerns about the risk of prolonged underperformance in emerging country markets due to the negative implications of the Asian meltdown. And I guess now it matters. What happened to asset allocation? What happened to the minimal 5% weighting? This is funny stuff. David Letterman look out, or should Ted Koppel look out since Disney owns ABC now?

For those that still think that Brinker sold New Asia because he knew of the impending Asian crisis ponder this thought. Why didn't Brinker sell Montgomery Emerging Markets when he sold New Asia? Of course Brinker finally admitted that he had know prior knowledge of the impending Asian crisis on the air a few months ago, but there are still a few die hard supporters out there.

Funny that we always here about how Bob bought Montgomery Microcap Fund and how well it's done, but we never here about how badly Montgomery Emerging Markets has done. And don't forget about Morgan Stanley Emerging Markets (MSF). But I guess if Bob were to admit that his Emerging Markets play didn't work that ratings for Moneytalk would go down since no one wants to listen to a guru that makes mistakes and then, well, you know what happens next. That's Entertainment!

Best Regards.
