Student Government Association

Minutes for the meeting of September 9, 1997

Those in attendance: C. Mason, J. Tucker, S. Martin, N. Dusseault, J. Sillo, C. Hodge, D. Smirles, C. Colello, J. Buxton, J. Schneider, A. Cowan, J. Tavares, J. Lavoie, J. Thompson, D. Milton, T.
Harris, K. Patane, J. Eldredge, D. Salzburger, B. Bailey.

C. Mason explained the new way we will be holding meetings. S. Martin will now officially be taking over as chair of the meeting. We will also be revamping the constitution. S. Martin called the meeting
to order at 6:13 p.m.
Roll call was called. J. Tucker will be acting as Secretary until one is elected.

N. Dusseault handed out bedget committee sheets. J. Tucker briefed everyone on elections for next
week.

S. Martin listed all committees that we needed to fill and then asked for volunteers. Positions were left open for Freshmen. Club Day is next Thursday. Chad passed out the sheets for people to sign
up to be at the SGA table....

Penmen mascot-This year we need the penmen to support all sports teams not just b-ball. Last year they were paid $10 a game. To do all the games this year we will need two penmen. C. Mason brought up the fact we could pay them with book scholarships and because we have so many
people who want to be the Penmen we might need to have tryouts. J. Sillo moved to grant $400 in total for two book scholarships for the people chosen to be the Penmen. J. Schneider seconded it,
and opened it to discussion. J. Buxton asked if we knew if they even wanted the money in the form of scholarships. D. Smirles asked about whether or not we could get a new Penmen costume. C.
Mason said that was a different topic. J. Eldredge moved to vote. Motion carried 16-0-0.

SGA Computer-Lat year Kate from CAPE came in asking to use their additional budget for a new computer. It ended up at the end of the year that they did not have enough money. C. Mason said
we could give them our computer for $1200 (the money they had remaining at the end of the year), and buy a new one for ourselves. S. Martin pointed out the fact that the money left over is now in
our money market account so that is where we would need to take it from. In total we would need to take out $2300 to buy the computer we would need. T. Harris moved to take the $2300 out of
the money market account to buy a new computer. J. Eldredge seconded it, and it was open to discussion. J. Schneider asked what SGA Executive Board does on the computer. C. Mason said
that each Exec Board member uses it for their different positions. J. Buxton asked if both computers were upgradable. S. Martin said yes, they were. J. Sillo called it to a vote. Motion carried 16-0-0.

D. Smirles moved to open discussion about getting a new Penmen. T. Harris seconded it and opened it for discussion. C. Mason said we could spend the $900 now and get an identical costume,
or we could wait and get someone to design a new one and buy it for next year. D. Smirles, J. Schneider and T. Harris will be heading up a committee for a new Penmen.

D. Milton moved to open the discussion about meeting times. Some people are having problems with the 6 p.m. start time. T. Harris seconded it, and opened it up to discussion. J. Buxton called it
to a vote for a 6:30 start time. No second. Motion failed. After discussion D. Milton said she could make it but would need to be a little late. Others agreed and said they might be a little late at times.

J. Tavares asked for a waiver to run for Secretary of SGA even though this is her first year. J. Schneider moved to give Jennifer Tavares a waiver, B. Bailey seconded it, and C. Colello called it to
a vote. C. Mason said we would be trying a secret ballot vote. Paper was passed out and then collected. J. Tucker counted votes. Motion to allow J. Tavares to have a waiver passes 14-1-1.

S. Martin said he was still checking into leasing or buying a van. He will try to have more information next week. Cab rides that are taking over Safe Rides are all set. Number is 622-0088.

Advisor's notes: Camp Synergy was installed this summer. Campus video is up and running UC-TV should be running by Friday.

B. Bailey moved to adjourn, J. Lavoie seconded it, and J. Schneider called it to a vote. Motion carried 16-0-0.
