Samsung Electronics Wins Set-top Box Order From Canada

August 14, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will export 1,100
set-top boxes worth US$1.9 million to Canada's TELUS Corp. for a multimedia
service.
TELUS, Canada's third-largest telecommunications company, will use the set-top
boxes for a trial multimedia service in major Canadian cities, including Calgary.
Using the device subscribers will be able to access various multimedia services,
including a high-speed Internet service, digital broadcasting as well as a home
shopping network, the company said.

Samsung Electronics is the exclusive provider for TELUS's trial run. For this
reason, the Korean electronics giant may beat out other competing suppliers when
the Canadian company launches its multimedia service at the end of 1999, the
official noted.

The world's set-top box market is expected to expand by an average of 65
percent year on year in 1998.

Meanwhile, Korea Telecom and Hanaro Telecom are conducting a similar trial
service in Korea. The country's set-top box market is expected to be worth 340
billion won through 2001.

"Samsung will enter the U.S. set-top box market in 1999 based on its first
contract with TELUS," a company official said.

Hi John, thought I'd get back to speed on Cube. Noticed that Gateway is making DVD a permanent part of their new boxes... wondered if CUBE was the component on this? Looks like momentum has gone from engineering specs to practical reality.
