No, it's not too late to short the stock at all if you don't get over-confident about it. Sell on any rally attempt. I also would hope that short sellers would hold back a little extra effort for the market close. So if you want to just day-trade, then do the covering earlier than the last 30 minutes - shorts have been shooting themselves in the foot on their trading patterns by driving up the closing number. I've talked to a few "market makers" who have said they try to avoid being in the position to have to cover at the close. They also have strategies for selling or buying at the close to move the stock their way. Let's hope we all don't become our own worst enemies in this thing.
