Videogames are grossing $5 bil/yr, which is similar amount to Hollywood's box office
take, according to Oddworld Inhabitants Inc's (San Luis Obispo, CA) pres Lorne Lanning.
The 60 employee Oddworld is 49% owned by GT Interactive, which has the rights to
market Oddworld's games. Oddworld's Abe's Oddysee, a game featuring 3-D characters
that was created on a budget of $2.5 mil, has sold 1 mil copies globally since its
launching in 9/97. Oddworld is expected to obtain around $6 mil in royalties in 1998
from GT. Sales of Abe's Oddysee in Japan have totaled 110,000 copies, although
Oddworld had wanted to generate sales of 250,000 units there. The problem is that the
Japanese want cute characters and Abe is not cute. Detail is given to how the formation
of Oddworld came about.
