"I have lived in many areas where Christianity is unknown or unpopular, and there I have seen many people leading morally exemplary lives."

Using your standards of morality? You have exalted yourself as a judge of God and his moral standards and are consequently left without the aid of his standard of light. The only standard you have left is your internal God given conscience that is flawed thru sin.
We still have an absolute standard of morality and its contained in the Word of God and comes from his heart. When you measure yourself or others by this morality, you will find yourself wanting. It's your choice. You can continue on the path of darkness and relativism or you can abolish pride and haughtiness and seek the eternal light and standard of God's life thru humility and brokenness of heart. May the Lord give you grace according to the humility and hunger for truth contained in your heart. I will be praying for God to enlighten you as I head for bed.

"If I felt any great gap in my life, I might be tempted to inquire further, but frankly I don't."

May the Lord give you the gap necessary to lead you to his Word and his salvation through Christ Jesus. When the gap comes, approach your inquiry with an open heart and an open mind, and you will experience the most fruitful inquiry of your life. I have prayed that the Lord begin his work even as your read thes last words.
