Paul,

That is exactly true of ORCL, IFMX and SYBS. That is NOT true of IBM.
DB2 for MVS is not the same code base as DB2/6000 or DB2/400 or the old product for OS2. They were ALL different code bases. I used to have a 400 page manual, small print, that had the SQL differences between them. Came in very handy when selling against them. Which did they port to Win/NT? Was either the DB2/6000 version or the OS2 version. In any case, assuming it was the mightier of the two (DB2/6000) it wouldn't be as functional or have the market share of an existing player like SQL Server. That was my primary point. They'd be buying market share in a space they don't play well, and it comes with a tool set and gateways.

Probably the most compelling point for an IBM to acquire a SYBS isn't even code. It is people. They get a consulting staff that lives primarily on platforms where they don't have a substantial presence. They also get a sales force that has access to accounts they don't. IBM has a large amount of HW/SW in their sales catalog that will work in Sun/HP/NCR/(non-IBM) accounts, e.g. Tivoli, DB2 for HP, that they almost never sell. "Hi, I'm from IBM here to sell you high speed fiber channel equipment for your Sun shop." SYBS sales force and existing account base could be of substantial value to IBM if they used it properly. If I were a SYBS sales rep I'd be pretty interested in being able to sell full solutions from that catalog. It is very complete.

Michelle -- there is a difference between being bullish and speculating.

Why is this discussion on the IFMX thread Syborg?
