Steven Call: Re Compaq better than Dell.

Dell is doing so well because they listen to the needs of the PC market, and fulfill them. Examples of this are BTO and an established Internet ordering system. Compaq is caught up in the corporate politics which often accompany large companies, and this is how they have making many of their decisions. Examples include:
- The goal of becoming a $50 billion computer manufacturer. This is an internal goal, not a customer-oriented goal.
- Late to the game on direct ordering because they didn't want to aggrevate resellers.
- Not spinning off Altavista, despite the fact that Altavista can grow better if run independently.

While Compaq has been slow out of the gate with direct ordering, including Internet orders, Dell is now doing an average of 6 or 7 million dollars a day over the web. Recently, it took over a month for Compaq to deliver a custom machine to my office (I would have chosen Dell, but IT wouldn't let me.) Compaq is not nimble enough to keep up with Dell. Period.

This does not mean Compaq's stock won't go up. It will. But if Compaq can advance despite making internally-oriented decisions, Dell can continue to advance further by reacting to and anticipating market demand.
