To all: Big picture story from Business Week Online. As an aside, I've taken courses from two of the people quoted in the article, Mokyr and Gordon. Gordon was a "renown" economic adviser to Jimmy Carter. I think that just about says it all for this character. Mokyr was always considered something of a gadfly by the liberals at NU. Guess who's getting the last laugh.

LSI vs other Semi's ----
It is interesting that MU has had a big run that LSI has not
participated in. While many analysts have come out and hyped
PC semi's and DRAM companies, it seems like the most negative
comments out there are in fact directed exactly at this sector
of the semiconductor market. If one looks at the year-end report
of Nat. Semiconductor, it makes negative comments specifically
on the sub $1000 PC. This is the same point that is made by
Kurlak of Merrill Lynch. If we assume they are wrong, then
things should improve for the whole industry. If we assume they
are right, then the semi's whose business lies mostly with PC's
will suffer the most. LSI has a big Telecom business which
is much stronger price-wise than the PC business. This should
protect them somewhat from the downside in earnings (in terms of
stock price, who knows?). Therefore, I think LSI is a speculative
buy. I think Micron and others are being hyped only for trading
purposes.
