OSAKA, Japan, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Showa Plastics Co Ltd said on Friday it had applied for court protection from creditors under Japan's bankruptcy laws because of a worsening financial situation.

The Japanese plastics maker said in a statement that its outstanding liabilities totalled 17.77 billionyen.

Unlisted Showa Plastics, established in 1937, said in a statement that two of its domestic units had also filed for protection from creditors under the Japan Corporate Rehabilitation Law.

HK firms named as top crisis survivors

The equity research branch of SG Securities has identified 50 Asian companies that it believes will "thrive and emerge stronger" from the regional economic turmoil, with three companies from Hong Kong leading the list.

The research house ranked micro-motor manufacturer Johnson Electric, trading company Li & Fung, and computer-maker VTech leading the index of promising companies.
