MCI Completes Standardization of DSC's Litespan(R)-2000 Access Systems August 14, 1998 DALLAS, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ via NewsEdge Corporation -- DSC Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: DIGI) announced today that MCI Communications has standardized DSC's Litespan(R)-2000, a Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) system, for inclusion in MCI's network. MCI plans to feature the Litespan as one of its access vehicles to be placed in co-location sites, where it will provide service to the growing number of MCI local customers. Litespan offers the scalability required to gracefully grow as an access network element while being hosted off existing Class 5 switches via GR-303 interfaces throughout the MCI network. Rick Price, director of MCI's Access Engineering, said: "DSC has been a long-standing vendor in our traditional long-haul switched services business. Today, we're transforming into the world's first local-to-global service provider. Litespan will help us deliver world-class services to our fast-growing local customer base." Tom Wolf, DSC's vice president of MCI sales, said: "Given the wide deployment of Litespan throughout North America, MCI has taken advantage of a proven technology that will give its network the capability to offer a full suite of features, as well as a graceful migration path to broadband as the market evolves." Litespan is an advanced SONET (Synchronous Optical Network)-based access platform that offers a full range of services from narrowband to broadband. The platform also supports xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technology, as well as Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC) applications. Litespan features a modular design, so that low line-sized applications can be addressed as needed initially and the system can later grow to fit expanding network needs. MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a leading provider of local-to-global communications services to business, government and residential users. The company's fast-growing portfolio of advanced data and IT services accounts for a quarter of MCI's approximately $20 billion in annual revenue. MCI operates one of the world's largest and most advanced digital networks, connecting local markets in the U.S. to hundreds of locations worldwide. MCI has agreed to merge with WorldCom, one of the world's fastest-growing communications companies. The merger, which is expected to be completed in mid-1998, will create MCI WorldCom, a company uniquely positioned in the U.S. local and long-distance markets as well as the global data and Internet markets.
