Soundview Financial Adds Compaq
Computer To Focus List

NEW YORK -- SoundView Financial Group Inc. analyst Mark Specker
placed Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) on the firm's focus list, explaining
that Compaq is one of the best plays on healthy PC demand in the U.S. and
Europe in the second half, according to a research note.

"We continue to see a steady stream of evidence supporting our contention
that a severe and industrywide inventory correction, not poor demand, was
the culprit in poor first-half performance by industry bellwethers, particularly
Compaq," Specker wrote in the note.

"We think mounting evidence that inventory was the main problem will
continue to reveal a healthy demand picture," into the fourth quarter,
Specker said. "This should give Compaq, and the market, the impetus to
continue raising numbers."

Specker noted that Compaq has suggested healthy unit demand.
Sell-through of its consumer PCs grew 130% year over year in the month of
July, he wrote.

Compaq told Specker that its enterprise hardware business is "looking
good," and also noted some "stability" in pricing in its third quarter.

The company also said its integration of Digital Equipment is going well, and
most reductions in head count will be occurring late in the third quarter and
in the fourth quarter, Specker wrote.
