OT: Fiber Optic Play International Fibercom, just had a great quarter. This company seems growth of the action in fiber optic networks. Interesting that they're mentioned as talking to QWST, thought QWST does all its own work? Cox Cable is a big client. From redherring.com ...little-known International Fibercom (IFCI), a "one-stop shop" for the design and installation of structured cable and fiber-optic networks, blew its earnings through the roof as the company announced record operating results for the second quarter. The company reported record profits of $1.9 million, or $0.10 per share, on revenues of $18.0 million. These numbers compare to a profit of $400,000, or $0.06 per share a year ago, with gross margins increasing to 34 percent from 27 percent a year prior. The year over year revenue, EPS and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) comparisons are even more dramatic. Second quarter sales increased by 123 percent over the previous year, earnings-per-share increased by 125 percent, and EBITDA was up a whopping 347 percent. What's the key to International Fibercom's success? How about good old-fashioned new contracts totaling more than $55 million over the last six months, which, according to CEO Joe Kealy, "far surpasses the amount of new contracts announced during any six-month period in the company's history." And the growth appears to show no signs of slowing down. How's this for bullish: "The second quarter produced results that we believe the company can not only maintain, but expand upon in the coming quarters," said Mr. Kealy. Another source said the company has been talking with all of the major players who are building out their networks, including the likes of Sprint (FON), Qwest Communications (QWST) and AT&T (T), and that "investors should be very enthused by some upcoming announcements in the next couple of months." Mr. Kealy's statements in a prepared release bear this out: "Contract activity remains extremely brisk, and we expect to be announcing a significant number of new awards in the very near future." Through its four subsidiaries -- Kleven Communications, Riley Communications, Concepts in Communications, and Compass Communications - International Fibercom is building out some of the biggest broadband networks in the nation.
