Hello Canadian Option Thread

I have a question on trading stock options. I am fairly new to investing and have never traded options before. I understand the basics on options and have read a bit on how I can insure my long position against further declines(I understand that It might be a bit late for that now).

So I am long Canadian Banks, and Bombardier I did not buy at their peak prices but at least 10% higher than Fridays close.

Am I right in assuming that I could have bought puts to protect my downside as prices collapse?

And now that I have the shares if I wanted to exit at less of a loss then fridays close shows me, is there anyway I could use the shares in my possession to do that??

Would really appreciate any help on this
