I agree wholeheartedly with you Don! This news made me literally run through the office to check to see if there was some sort of pop in MO. When I saw that it was still down, I had to run back to make sure I read the Bloomberg correctly.

Now I think its time for me to go out on margin and buy some of those LEAPS. I already own some Dec calls that have fallen further out of the money, but I remain confident that a settlement with the states will be reached by then. The 2001s have taken a pounding recently, so they are looking attractive.

I would imagine that the best time to announce a settlement with the states would be right after labor day. I remember the day after labor day last year was a 200+ point day on the Dow because all of the Street's big players were back from their summer vacations. MO announcing such a settlement at that time, would probably cause the price to skyrocket, especially since as evidenced today, MO couldn't move upward despite the big news regarding the FDA's move to regulate tobacco and nicotine was denied. IMO the bear is steadily losing its grip on Mighty MO. It is near the time for the bull to knock the bear clear off.

choo-choo baby!
long on MO,

geoff

The Sweet Smell Of Victory!!!

I find it interesting that a host of bad news was released today by MO along with the good news.

Bad:
news.com
news.com

Good:
news.com
tobacco.org

Maybe they want to keep the stock price in check so they can take advantage of the depressed price when they start their massive stock buy back program.

Don, THE BOTTOM LINE is the stock price and the Market doesn't seem to care one iota for this great news- at least, not yet. To be sure, its added leverage in settlement talks. I listen to the Market when I invest. The Market is clearly saying here that WITHOUT a settlement the share price of MO is going nowhere fast. Again, the Risk needs to be reduced. Otherwise, MO's stock will find itself on permanent vacation. Value can not be unlocked here without a settlement. Listen.
