Maurice:
The only PII's that might be in short supply would be those that have been hand autographed by Andy Grove, then dipped in diamond dust. (g)

There has been an expected uptick in demand as September approaches ("back-to-school" sales,...strictly seasonal). There is also the impact of clever sales types capitalizing on Y2K fears to sell new boxes. (Good for them as it keeps the money circulating). In the current environment, ANY uptick is viewed as evidence of that long-awaited "rebound". The Church of Intel worshippers see a "resurrection", but the corpse still lies there without breathing or moving.

There are more important rumours in my circle of pals. Look for a LONG delay in Merced, perhaps even a non appearance (product leapfrog discussed as a "cover" for the fact that it may arrive too late). Intel is a superb manufacturer. It has much to prove this round vis-a-vis its design/engineering talents.

An interesting aside: AMD will shortly be shipping 3 million micros a quarter. That's 12 million per annum and growing. If 85 million boxes get shipped this year, the industry will be quietly delighted. Now let's see,....does that work out to the theft of 13% of the market in a year?
Then of course, there's that other interloper, also feeding on what formerly was Intel's exclusive lunch. Of course the twits happily pay twice as much for a lot less earnings this year.

Best, Earlie
