VARBusiness Names Apex Award Winners; 3Com, Hewlett-Packard, ViewSonic and Western Digital Take Top Honors for Reseller Relationships

MANHASSET, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 14, 1998--3Com Corp. (Nasdaq: COMS), Hewlett-Packard Co., (NYSE: HWP), ViewSonic Corp. and Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC) took top honors in the second Annual Peripherals Excellence (APEX) Awards being announced in the August 17 issue of CMP Media's VARBusiness magazine.

The awards measure relationship programs of computer-peripherals vendors for their authorized value-added resellers (VARs) and systems integrators. Nearly 700 resellers ranked manufacturers of high-speed modems, network laser printers, 17-plus inch monitors and high-capacity hard drives on as many as 11 criteria covering three main areas: products and pricing, support, and partnership.

First-place honors went to 3Com, high-speed modems; Hewlett-Packard, network laser printers; ViewSonic, 17-plus inch monitors; and Western Digital, high-capacity hard drives.

Editor-in-Chief Robert DeMarzo said: "Unlike market share, which is rented, APEX is a measurement of customer satisfaction. It provides objective assessments of which companies are successfully moving with the times in helping their channel partners to sell both enterprise solutions and small-business systems. These factors help determine whether a company is easy to do business with."

According to Andrew Vogel, editorial research director at VARBusiness, "APEX is the industry benchmark of reseller relationships with peripherals vendors. As authorized members of the programs, the surveyed VARs are uniquely qualified to evaluate the companies with which they do business."

Representatives of the winning companies will receive their honors at a special awards dinner on Thursday evening, August 27, held in conjunction with the Breakaway XChange Conference in New Orleans. Breakaway XChange is cosponsored by CMP Media's channel publications and the Computer Technology Industry Association. The VARBusiness APEX awards dinner is cosponsored by KeyLink Systems, Inc., Dickens Data Systems, Inc. and IBM Corp.

Complete rankings, analysis and weighted scores earned by the vendors will be published in the August 17 issue of VARBusiness and at the magazine's Web site, varbusiness.com.

The leading magazine for the value-added channel, VARBusiness goes behind the headlines to provide in-depth market intelligence and perspective about the business trends, product and technology issues, and supplier activities impacting value-added resellers (VARs). VARBusiness provides a unique blend of information to help VARs manage and grow their businesses and provide better solutions to their customers. Its Web site is at varbusiness.com.
