My tech teacher went to a Mac seminar
and they said system 9, Gershwin will only
be available on G-3 *native* computers.

There's no such thing as "System 9" for the Mac. The next major OS releases are Mac OS 8.5 and the beta of Mac OS X (ten). OS 8 will be upgraded into 2000 (or 1900 for some of you), and the release version of OS X should be ready by Summer 1999.

OS 8.5, 8.6 and Sonata will be fully compatible with G3 and non-G3 Macintosh. In OS X's case, the compatibility issues are far from being decided. Since it's written in the same high-level language to write Rhapsody, it's just as portable as Rhapsody. My guess is that PowerPC 604's And 603's -- or even older Macs upgraded with G3 processor cards -- will be supported.

As for "Planned obsolescense" try:

A. Running Win98 on a 486.
B. Running a new PC application on a 7 year old PC
C. Running a 7 year old application on a new PC
