There is an interesting article in the new September 1998 issue of FAST COMPANY magazine that is (not yet available on their web site, fastcompany.com) that gives a clear explanation of what Qualcomm's OmniTRACS is all about and how it has revolutionized large parts of the trucking industry. The article, Roberts Rules the Road, p114, is about Roberts Express and how they saved money and more importantly how their customers got better service when they started using OmniTRACS.

You are exactly correct that she and her piano player proposed a system of spread spectrum signals as a method of encryption. "It was Shannon of Bell Labs who first promoted cdma." (cr)
