Not that it matters if its Cisco or Ascend, but good news from Cisco means good news for PMCS. I thought Ascend was outselling Cisco, but I guess the size of Cisco's installed base and the accompanying add-ons and upgrades translates into leading market share. Ascend is probably winning a fair amount of new business due to the release of their next generation WAN equipment (GX 550, CBX 500 etc.) vs. Cisco being a little behind in getting next gen carrier class BPXs & IGXs out. Looks like the LAN Lightstreams are doing well though. Either way, PMCS chips go out the door with them all.

Cisco Ranked #1 in Worldwide ATM Switch Port Shipments and Sales
by Cahners In-Stat Group

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- August 17, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced
that according to a recent market-share report from the Cahners In-Stat
Group, it has continued to gain momentum in the ATM WAN and LAN switching
markets. Cisco is ranked first in both worldwide ATM WAN switch port
shipments and in worldwide ATM WAN switch manufacturer sales in the latest
market-share report. The number one rankings for both areas are for the
second calendar quarter, as well as for the first half of 1998.

The Cahners In-Stat Group report also ranked Cisco first in worldwide ATM
LAN switch port shipments and worldwide ATM 155 megabit per second (Mbps)
LAN switch port shipments. These rankings are for the second calendar
quarter of 1998.

"Cisco has maintained its leadership in the worldwide ATM WAN switch
market, holding the number one position in both port shipments and
manufacturer sales for the third quarter in a row," said Jeremy Duke,
Director of the Networking Group at Cahners In-Stat Group. "The company is
also emerging as a leader in the ATM LAN switch arena, with the largest
market share in worldwide port shipments and 155 Mbps port shipments in the
second quarter of 1998."

"Our 1998 fiscal year was our first billion dollar year for ATM-related
sales and represented a 50+ percent growth of this business from FY1997,"
said Joe Golden, vice president of the Multiservice Switching Business Unit
at Cisco Systems. "The strong interest in our xDSL, multiservice, optical
internetworking and IP+ATM products, as well as our partnerships with
leading enterprises and service providers, give us confidence that we can
extend our leadership in ATM."

"These results demonstrate Cisco's commitment to its ATM customers and show
considerable momentum at maintaining the number one or two position in each
market in which we compete," said Prem Jain, vice president and general
manager of the Enterprise WAN Business Unit at Cisco Systems. "Cisco
remains dedicated to providing industry leading solutions for its
customers, whether it's ATM, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, SONET/SDH, FDDI or Token
Ring."

The Cahners In-Stat Group market-share report will be published at the end
of August and is part of the firm's Networking Quarterly service, which
publishes industry market share data each quarter. The latest report lists
Cisco's leading market share in worldwide ATM WAN switch port shipments at
23.3 percent for the first half of 1998. Cisco's worldwide ATM WAN switch
manufacturer sales market share is also ranked first at 27.2 percent for
the first half of 1998.

Proof of Cisco's ATM LAN switch market momentum is reflected in its being
ranked first for the second calendar quarter in worldwide ATM LAN switch
port shipments with 26.5 percent market share. Cisco also regained its
leadership position in worldwide ATM 155 Mbps LAN switch port shipments
with a market share of 25.3 percent for the second calendar quarter.
