To the thread,

OK, so furnace controls are not that exciting. I think the important thing is that an announcement was made regarding a contract for one of the new technologies. Given that there were 4 design wins in the second quarter with no announcements, I think this is a step in the right direction.

Below is a response to an inquiry my husband made to Motorola re: introduction of digital phones. Thought the expected time-lines would be of interest, particularly the release of TDMA and CDMA compatible StarTACs in the fourth quarter.

Thank you for your recent correspondence with Motorola. It is always a pleasure hearing from our customers.

Regarding your inquiry, there are several technologies referred to as "PCS", or digital. These terms apply to GSM, TDMA, and CDMA.

Our GSM North America products include the StarTAC Select 1.9 and 7000g, and the MicroTAC Select 2000e, 3000e, and 6000e. GSM products are only available in areas covered by GSM North American systems that operate at the 1900 MHz frequency. To learn more about our GSM product line, please locate thefollowing URL address on our website.

Our TDMA products, the digital M70 and M75, are dual mode and began shipping earlier this year. These units are dual mode and operate on an AMPS, NAMPS, or TDMA IS 136 technology.

The first in our line of CDMA products, the SC-725, is shipping in limited quantities to a select market channel. Our product planners are hopeful this unit will be available nationwide (where CDMA technology is implemented) very soon. I do not have a release or ship date to provide, as this has not been determined. This phone will operate on a AMPS, NAMPS, or CDMA system.

We are anticipating the release of TDMA and CDMA compatible StarTACs in the fourth quarter of 1998. These models will be similar in size to our analog StarTACs and offer similar features to our current TDMA and CDMA products. Additional information regarding specific dates of release is not available at this time. Please continue to watch our website for updates.

I hope this information is helpful to you. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Cellular Information Center at 1-800-331-6456. On behalf of Motorola, we appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future.

Sincerely,

Kristin Hopkins
Motorola, Inc.

Can anyone give descriptions and pros/cons of CDMA, TDMA, and GSM?
