Timbo, If you are a TRADER and that "sage advice" you got was from your tax advisor [at "work" or elsewhere], I'd suggest you move on and find new representation.

Several things you said raised "red flags" but I'll just address one.
I presume you are talking about form 1040, page 2, under line 65 where it asks: "Your occupation". This is supposed to be the occupation you held DURING the immediate tax year. I believe it is for classification purposes. No big deal. If you were retired but lived off the interest of a big cash position, I might suggest INVESTOR or RETIRED, but regardless, this wouldn't have any effect of your social security taxes.

If on the other hand you are not an investor, but consider yourself a TRADER, then you certainly are not "retired" (g)
