Sure, when it works. You ran interference for your customer.
I got Western Digital to cross-ship me a disk when one started
making bearing noises; two days later I transferred the data
and shipped it back. Manufacturer's 3-year warranty, BTW.
My total cost: 4 bucks to ship the bad drive back.

BUT I don't think you and I are typical. It could be worth
it, but that's an individual evaluation. And if you're out
to save trouble, it has to work smoothly or you haven't
accomplished your objective.
