The merger with Ciena was necessary for Tellab to start competing against the big players. This was a purchase of technology, and I agree that the earnings shortfall makes little difference to Birck, although it does increase the pressure for Ciena to be seamlessly assimilated ASAP. I used to own Ciena and they are not the consistent earnings machine that Tellabs is. On that front, Tellabs and its management is about as consistent as it gets. I made a mistake getting out a couple years ago, and will use this opportunity to jump back in. I bought a little at 56 15/16 yesterday, willing to pay a $4 premium not to play the Ciena arbitrage angle. HOwever, I do agree that there is almost zero chance that this merger will be squashed. I don't think Ciena shares become Tellabs on the 21st, but I'm not sure. Is this true? If not, what day do they transfer over?
