Renby - there is sort of an answer a few posts back.

My understanding of these things is that your "nightmare scenario" is absolutely impossible. Do not worry about it.

Jon.

<<if I buy in the period in between, will I be paying for the spun off portion ofthe company, but not receiving the dividend.>>

After the record date the Qcom share price should adjust down to exclude the value of SpinCo. at distribution. Similar to stocks characteristically dropping by the amount of the divy after the record date but before payment. One way or another, the price of Q will adjust to reflect whether you are entitled to the SpinCo. distribution, or not. The 64 won question, of course, is what is the "value" (inherent and stated) of SpinCo. at distribution. ...Tim

Remember that the distribution is taxable the same as any cash dividend, so one may wish to wait until after the ex-dividend date to avoid the taxes that will be due. With luck there will be QCOM when-issued trading on the NAZ prior to the xd date. By buying these one would avoid the taxes yet be covered should the price of QCOM advance in the interim.
