Aw, come on Maurice...the alien sign was put up just for you....<gg> If your an engineer in Sandy eggo, then chances are you can get hired without much trouble....same goes for slick-on valley...I would suspect that the unemployed engineers are opting to live in places where there is no high tech, like the outbacks of Alabama, Montanna, etc...rather than some place where there are tech companies. Probaby this is mostly due to the fact that they got burnt out working in the high tech rat race and opted to live there. As for the Alien thing, when I was recruiting for Qualcomm, it was almost always the case that there would be less than 2% qualified US born engineers in almost any top graduate school across the country. We would hire foreign nationals alot. The visa and green card situation is getting so bad in terms of how long it takes to get approval, that it it is really tough when you find a great candidate and cannot get them on board for more than 10 weeks due to the INS stuff, then it takes almost a year to get a green card. The answer is to have the high tech companies do two things. first work to get the visa bill thru and get quotas more realistic to todays situation to help this out and second to invest alot in grade schools where the basis for math and science is taught and get that level back up in our teenagers so that when they graduate from high school, they can and want to go study in the engineering discipline. There are also countries right now with gluts of engineers for certain fields which are key to the US high tech, but due to the visa bill, we can;t get them. Case in point, Qualcomm is looking for alot of good RF radio engineers. Germany has a glut of them and there are RF engineers who are out of work. but due to the INS rules, it is almost nearly impossible to hire them here and take advantage of them. As for soldering, the Japanese still have the best technology and I believe they are free to give this to China if they wish. I don't think they really want to do that. Is soldering really a state secret?
