Hi I2: In looking at the movement of the indices during the past weeks, I did notice more strength in the smaller indices than in the larger indices--at least at times. It is hard to notice strength when everything is weak. I think that if the major indices go into bear markets the ones already in bear markets would eventually bottom before the major indices--simply because they had a head start.

Look at the OSX. It went from 140 something in November 1997 to about 95 then rallied to about 120 and in the second leg of the decline dropped to the low 60s so far. Under Dow theory, there normally would be another rally and then a final third leg down. Maybe that would reach into the 40s. The major indices are just now in their first leg down.

Now whether the OSX rallies or lingers around the lows--I would not know. In the final leg down of a bear market, just about everyone is selling. How long will it take investors to forget the beating they took?
