I went down to CompUSA over at Culver City today. When I got there I saw two families each pushing a cart with an iMac on it and Epson printer underneath it. I thought to myself..Wow pretty cool.

When I walked into the store, there was a long line of people waiting in line for the cashier. There were 5 people in line each with an iMac. As I got towards the Store Within a Store, there were a 2-3 more people pushing boxes of iMacs away and about 15 people circled around the iMac demo. And another half dozen or so testing out the PowerBooks and G3 desktops. About 5 minutes after I got there all the iMacs were gone. Supposedly 17 iMacs were sold right then and there....the rest went to fill the back orders. I'm not sure how accurate these numbers are or exactly how many this particular store received but they are all gone now. One person said that they are expecting more units on Monday.

Most of the people there were volunteers. I talked to many of the volunteers from LA Mac User Group and half a dozen customers during the 2 hours or so that I was there. The atmosphere was incredible. People were excited not just about iMac but also about Apple. Every 5 min or so you hear people mention how well Apple's stock is doing and how much they wish they had bought some back in Jan...hehe.

There were two guys who used PCs that wanted to learn more about Macs. I show them Virtual PC and talked to them about various hardware trivia and computing in general for about 1 hour. They asked me dozens of questions...showing a lot of interest about the Mac. I show them a number of Mac features that they hadn't known about the Mac before. Even as pretty savvy PC users they were really impressed with the Mac. They repeatedly said that they think PowerPC are much much faster than Pentiums. I feel obligated to tell them that that is only true on certain tasks. PowerPC in general are faster but not necessarily twice as fast. But they insisted that from what they've seen PowerPC really kicks ass over Pentiums. I find that amazing. A year ago I doubt you would be able to find any PC users willing to admit that Pentiums were slower than PowerPC. One had to debate for hours using technical factoids to demonstrate PowerPC's virtues. Today PC users are coming to me and telling me that PowerPC is much faster than their Pentiums.... All those Snail and Toasted Bunny Ads are starting to pay off. Something is definitely working.

BTW, while all the volunteers there were really nice and helpful. The CompUSA staff there still suck big time. This must be one of the worst stores around.

Then I went over to Personal Support Computers, a VAR near where I live in West LA. They had a ton of iMacs. Even after selling a ton before I got there they still had about 20. This particular store seems to have pretty close relationship with Apple. They always seem to be the first to get those difficult to come by models. Apple assigned 2 of their employees to do demos there today. I spoke with a couple of the people there and they said they are expecting to have another 80 or so iMacs by Monday.
