Lawrence;

<<BWDIK, maybe this is the precise issue that sent Shugart out packing.>>

Believe me, I have speculated about this one. To carry the speculation a bit further I have wondered if Seagate is embarking on a major change in strategy over which we are just seeing the very beginning.

<<It pains me to see you bearish on RDRT at around 6 and turning bullish around 8.5. >>

Hehe...if it pains you imagine how I feel. But the truth is I didn't get the bullish signals until later in the game, plain and simple. And, my bullishness is so tenuous I am not sure it can be called that. But I do think there is pent up interest in the drive group and RDRT in particular.

<<Ask WDC about their inventory situation.>>

Actually I have. They are starting to hire again out here in Asia. In addition after just two weeks maxtor has returned to a 5 day week. Something is afoot aside from my hopeful ramblings. But then again, something is always afoot. Usually something from way out in left field. <G>

best,
Stitch

Lawrence, from a couple of month old Forbes article on SEG I came across recently, apparently Shugart was the biggest proponent of a vertically integrated strategy (as the ultimate cost saver). This was not shared by the board who in fact favors outsourcing in order to stay technologically ahead and lead the time to market wars.

Shugart's departure is very favorable for RDRT particularly if they can / continue to produce the densest product available in a high yielding manufacturing environment.

Recall a few posts about several recent SEG defections for RDRT in the steps of Menon (former V.P.of head development from SEG). Perhaps SEG has internally de-emphasized head development and these engineers were in fact encouraged to seek employment with RDRT. I believe SEG now has a substantial vested interest in RDRT's success.

As for QNTM losses?? They never had this business in the first place. (at least not recently) Furthermore, I just read through QNTM's 10Q, and it indicated that MKE was getting lousy yields on GMR heads and was only going to be contributing about 15% to QNTM's production for the time being. I view this a prime opportunity for RDRT, and I'm confident that RDRT is working hard to gain share here.

WDC......RDRT has not lost all. They are still very much a player and are expected to qual. on a new program (3.4) soon. Besides, WDC isn't exactly lighting the world on fire themselves!! I'll take wins at SEG, Maxtor, and Samsung et al anyday.
