Dave,

Qualcomm is taking on 800 lb gorillas of the likes of ERICY and Nokia.. Given the market share of GSM/TDMA and the upgrade path ERICY and Nokia are given to their customers, it appears that the game is already lost.

If ERICY and NOKA had this kind of mentality before, they would not stand a chance to take on MOT a couple of years back, would they? How about MSFT vs. IBM before and now?

You never know. Technology changes so fast and so unpredictable. Some people (Tero and may be you too) just announced the death of MOT gorilla just not a while ago by some small guys such as ERICY and NOKA. IBM can revive, so as the death of Apple.

We just have to wait and see. Your guess is as good as mine. The same line applies to Tero.

Brian H.

First off even in the BWeek article Nokia CEO admits early CDMA handset problems(I think). They did occur. If you remember early CDMA Nokia's had very bad battery life, and weighed alot. This was due to early ASIC problems. As for paper patents point I disagree. First because a year and a half ago Ericy was on record saying CDMA didnt work, it was a sham etc etc etc. Whille at the same time Qcom had an open system working. These patents are the same as many CDMA2000 patents. I also rely back to the fact that Ericy, ETSI and others have all admitted they need Qcom's permission. I do not believe Ericson really has many patents at all. If they do they are a ploy, and are an attempt at stealing IPR's. Which I admit they may succeed at! Qcom also will have US government support, remember Soros, brent scrowcraft
are involved and will bring on pressure. This as an investor is irrelevent because as I stated before even a loss is a win for Qcom. They have many contracts and will prosper if CDMA in any form prospers. Thats not even bringing G*(globalstar) and omnitracs and Edoura into play. If you calculate the worth of the parts Q is worth around 100 a share. It has proven it can sustain earnings, and in October all sighns are showing that they will blow out numbers. This despite the problems in Asia! So as an investor I payed 47 cents on the dollar for a 100 good. All these concerns, including overblown asian concern is factored in the price. I feel its a good bet.
As for your concern about Qcom giving patents to Ericy and Nokia: I have to look at the record, Q has stated that it wants a system that can be upgraded by Cdma operators as well as GSM operators. They have stated this in their ETSI press release. Qcom has a history of being quite a fair grantor of property rights. Irwin Jacobs has a long history of being on honest fair CEO. So that fact coupled with the fact its completly in Q's interest leaves me to believe they would. On the other hand Erickson has lied and mislead Q and CDMA for years. I have no faith or credibility in their promises. Besides who is being reasonable: Qcom who wants a fair open Market, or ETSI who wants GSM vendors to have an advantage. Especially considering their mocking of CDMA not more then 1-2 years ago.
