goldsnow,

Then I think there must be something to the metaphor about not seeing the forest because the trees are in the way. But I definitely do not have your credentials or level of experience with Russia so please do post more.

One thing I will mention. While my experience with Russia was fleeting I nevertheless was struck by a sense of an indomitable spirit among many that I met. I also want to underscore that I think this is a very critical time for Russia's people. I would be pleased for a chance to read your thoughts on that subject. Also would like to know if you feel that the U.S. should take a lead banking role in support of a recovery there. By the way... I find nothing comical about N. Korea or Russia. My reference was to what I felt was your description which almost seemed a caricature of Russia drawn from the 60s.
Best,
Stitch

"My farther spent 16 years in Siberia under Stalin as one of the millions of "enemy of the people"...My opinions are indeed are very well informed (I was born and lived in what was Soviet Union for 24 years.."

I should have read the thread before I posted reply to you. Your personal knowledge of Russia is obviously superior to the information I have from reading and I would defer to you on any discussion of conditions there in recent years.

But - the familiarity you have with Russia makes it even more difficult to understand the interpretation of Russian history and people in your earlier post.

Ron

Brian K, take a chill pill
Russia is relevant as hell, for the reasons you state... in case you hadnt noticed, deflation is sweeping the globe... so what if zero fabs? ... they add to the Asian flu problem in a unique way in that Russia is barely Asia and more like hybrid... if Russia markets are hit, then perhaps Asia flu is affecting more than Asia

thanks also for pointing out the Russian tax situation... was unaware... so black market, barter market, and confusing tax laws --- lovely

Goldsnow, my heart goes out to you and your father... next door neighbor in my youth was Latvian Jew shot and left for dead in a heap by Nazis... rescued by peasant Russian girl in a wheelbarrow passing by... they married and had a daughter, the object of a crush of mine

meant no disrespect... Russia has a long long way to go to catch up even to (in order) Hungary, Poland, Czech, etc... NoKorea is a dangerous wounded animal dealing with starvation, not economic development
