NEW YORK, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc. and Sun Microsystems said Monday that together they will develop together products for Internet service providers(ISP) and phone carriers that would allow their subscribers to send and receive e-mail, voice and fax messages from any telephone or PC.

The products will be aimed at ISP or telecom companies that serve consumers, mobile business professionals, small or home-based businesses and outsourced corporate enterprises, the companies said.

The collaboration will use Sun Microsystems's Internet and network computing leadership and Lucent's expertise in voice messaging, speech processing and communications networking.

Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent makes equipment for telecommunications carriers. Sun Microsystems Inc., SUNW , a workstation maker and developer of the Java programming language, is based in Palo Alto, Calif.

The so-called unified messaging platform "will create huge market opportunities by extending the benefits of the Internet beyond traditional PC users," said John McFarlane, president of Sun Microsystems' Solaris Software.

"Imagine enabling parents without a computer to send an e-mail message to their child's PC at college just by picking up the phone, or a state representative notifying via e-mail a group of her constituents about an important environmental law being passed by just making a call from a cell phone on the House floor," McFarlane said.

Shares of Lucent gained 1-5/8 to 87-3/4. Sun Microsystems added 1-11/16 to 48-5/8.

Well, I am back in. The volatility of GMGC makes for
good position trading.

Hope to see some wisdom from Ray Rueb and Sea Otter
