REDMOND, Washington (CNN/SI) -- The list of great players never to have won a major championship is less one name. On Sunday, Vijay Singh of Fiji, long consider one of the hardest workers on the PGA Tour, saw all his sweat and toil pay off at Sahalee Country Club when he held off Steve Stricker to win the PGA Championship.

Singh, winner of five PGA Tour events during his five years on tour, posted a final-round 68 to solidify his position as Fiji's most celebrated golfer.

Stricker, also seeking his first major title, claimed thre lead briefly at 8 under early on, played valiantly but could not do better than even par on a day when rain soften Sahalee.

Mark O'Meara's bid for a third major of 1998 came apart after three straight bogeys on the front. O'Meara, who won the Masters and the British Open, finished at 4 under, tied with two-time PGA champion Nick Price, Frank Lickliter, and Billy Mayfair.
