<< how can you tell who are the market makers on a given stock >>

Kris,

Enter the symbol and hit 'view report' at this link

nasdaqtrader.com

It will give you the market makers for the stock and their volume traded in the previous month(s).

Kris, every symbol listed in the level two screen is either an ecn (REDI,BRUT,ISLD,BTRD,INCA,TNTO,ATTN etc.) or a market maker. The market makers will be on both sides at all times, they are required to. Anyone appearing in your level two quotes that are not an ecn are making a market in that stock.

Market makers typically have four letter "call symbols"...ie MLCO, Merril Lynch, GSCO goldman sachs, PWJC painne webber, etc.
That they are listed in the stock means they make markets, but it does not mean theymight not have clients who want to sell/buy it. That is they can be a market maker AND have clients that are buying selling..infact, thats exactly what they want, to be positioned in a stock as a market maker and to be receiving client order flow. That is what making a market is about, taking a principal's position in the transaction...into their inventory from one client, out to another, like any retail business with inventory.
Regards,
Steve
