Sword,
i think i disagree. It is possible to be long and short a stock in the same account. Its called a boxed hedge, or something similar.
if the positions are the exact same size your broker will probably only need about 10% of the value to maintain the position.

In regards to selling 1000 shares while being long only 500.....that would be a violation and would not be allowed. He could however be long 500, and short 1000.

you can ask Steve, i'm pretty sure that he will agree.

regards
peter

If you own a stock long and you want to go short, you need to place two separate
orders, one to close the long and one to open the short. Those are the rules. The only
way around this is to establish a box on the position requiring two accounts.

Sword, not sure about MB, but Datek allows long to short, or short to long on a single ticket.

Sword-

It seems to me that I was able to be long 500 and sell 1000 with Datek (or maybe it was Preferred Tech?), ending up 500 short. RealTick won't let you do that, I asked MB when I signed up.
