Michael,

I'm well aware of the Chinese human rights record, but that does not mean that Clinton "gave an ok to raid Taiwan". He didn't. He was conciliatory, to an extent that many people resent, but the current economic situation in Asia makes it very important to maintain functional relations with that quarter.

I hardly approve of what happened in Tiananmen, but I do have some understanding of why the Chinese leadership felt that move to be necessary. If you examine the parallels between the events leading up to Tiananmen and the revolution of 1911, and then look at what happened after the latter, you may see what I mean. Recall that many of the current leaders grew up in the chaos (to a degree unimaginable to the western mind) that followed the last time urban intellectuals brought down a Chinese government before they had anything to replace it with. If the Chinese can manage a controlled transition out of communism (as opposed to what is happening in Russia), the rest of the world will have a lot to thank them for. I'm not sure there's much point in ostracizing them for what's past.

Willing to discuss this one further, but the rest of the thread might not appreciate it. Asia Forum or Hong Kong, where we usually dispute on things Chinese, might be a better place. They're both pretty erudite places, though, with many old Asia hands and people who know their Chinese history and culture, so I'd suggest reading up and knowing exactly what you think before raising any topic over there.
