Company Press Release

3Com Corp. Continues Simplification
of Virtual Private Networks With New Support Services

Professional Services and Customer Support Capabilities Added to Industry Leading Portfolio of Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 17, 1998-- Global data networking leader 3Com Corp. (NASDAQ:COMS - news) today announced the continued simplification of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) with the delivery of new professional service offerings aimed at providing
support for installation and maintenance of VPNs.

These new service offerings help address two key issues which 3Com(R) believes are the inhibitors of users wanting to upgrade their existing infrastructure to VPN environments -- the initial
design/implementation and post sales service and support. These new VPN capabilities, which address the needs for both Enterprise and Network Service Providers (NSPs), deliver the same ease-of-use functionality that has been a hallmark of 3Com's VPN solutions.

''VPNs are, by nature, complex. 3Com believes that reducing VPN complexity is fundamental to their adoption by NSP and enterprise users,'' said Joyce Hervey, 3Com senior manager, Emerging
Technologies Marketing Programs.

''Since our road map announcement in 1997, which stressed an overall solutions approach, 3Com has delivered functionality aimed at driving the complexity out of VPN implementation and ongoing
administration. With this announcement, 3Com has now created a way for customers to simplify the immediate design and implementation of their new infrastructure while also providing a long term solution for the continued performance of their VPN-based network.''

3Com VPN solutions were originally announced October 1997 as part of a road map for complete VPN systems. These solutions are the foundation for next-generation wide area and remote access networks, enabling businesses to purchase cost-effective, secure public network-based alternatives to today's conventional and more expensive dedicated leased-line and dial-up networks.

Professional Services Ease Implementation Issues

Although the technologies used to implement VPNs are common, each customer has a slightly different VPN implementation. By using 3Com's Professional Services, both enterprise and NSP customers have an alternative to using their in-house staff for assessing, planning, staging and installing both internal networks and customer premises network equipment.

These Professional Services allow customers to leverage 3Com's expertise in planning, installing and maintaining networks of any size and configuration. Enterprises and NSP customers can now
choose from either a newly created Professional Service bundle or design their own customized program to meet their company's unique needs. These customized programs include the following
options:

-0-

Project Management -- 3Com will provide dedicated management
resources to deliver on-time on-budget network implementations. This includes the initial specification and project
implementation plan, testing of operability of each site, and
post-project review.

Network Design and Configuration -- 3Com will design and
configure the VPN for the customers current and future network
requirements.

Comprehensive Installation -- 3Com will complete all the standard
installation features including, unpack, inspect and place
equipment, insert and connect modular system components, verify
firmware configuration and parameters, run diagnostic self-tests,
load software and confirm configuration.

Transcend(R) Network Management Implementation -- 3Com will
install and configure the Transcend software to meet the
customers requirements. Additionally, 3Com will provide guidance
and orientations for the effective use of Transcend features,
including network surveillance, configuration, and performance
and fault analysis.

Application Engineering -- 3Com will custom design software for
compatibility with unique customer applications in a VPN enabled
environment or other remote access application.

Systems Integration -- 3Com will configure and test a VPN
solution before shipping to ensure plug-and-play installation

In addition to a full array of customized service offerings, 3Com also now offers a pre-packaged Professional Services bundle. This new offering can be used by enterprise customers (including
small and medium-sized customers which typically fall below the financial commitment for a customized service offering), channel partners (who wish to develop or augment their expertise on
VPN solutions), as well as ISPs/NSPs (wishing to expand their business to include a VPN service for enterprise customers).

3Com's new services bundle allows an ISP to augment their product offering while minimizing their risk as they enter a new market and gain experience working with enterprise customers. This new
pre-packaged service bundle consists of 20 hours of consulting time that can be used for the following professional services: Project Management, Network Design and Configuration, Comprehensive Installation, and Transcend Network Management Implementation.

These services are available now through this bundled offering, in addition to being offered independently as part of a customized professional service plan. Customers can work with their
account team and customer service business development manager to order and utilize this service bundle and develop the plan that will meet their company's requirements based on use of the included services.

''3Com worked with us by providing application engineering support during the planning stage and actual implementation of our VPN services offering. DDI required customization of software from
3Com to fit our requirements to simplify virtual private networking for our corporate customers in Japan. 3Com's customer service organization provided input and consultation during the
development of our software and application, as well as support during the implementation of these services,'' said Akihiro Nakashima, manager, Data Communications Department, Engineering
Group, DDI.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the Professional Services Bundle is $5,000.00 and includes 20 hours of customizable service as defined above. Pricing for the Customized Services vary and are dependent upon project
scope.

Regards

Neil

VARs Rank Their Vendors Peripheral Power
VAR Business - August 17, 1998

The Annual Peripherals Excellence (APEX) awards are in their second year,
and what struck us this time is that some peripherals vendors still appear to be
struggling with their channel programs. The scores reflected a wide range in
VAR satisfaction. A couple of the longtime favorites received outstanding
marks from VARs; prominent examples are Hewlett-Packard Co. in laser
printers (weighted total satisfaction score of 82 on a 100-point scale), and 3Com
Corp. in modems (80). By contrast, VARs gave modem vendor Boca Research
Inc. a 70 and handed Maxtor Corp. a 73 in hard drives.
