The real US economy's going down -
<<ISI Company Survey Index 49.4 week ended August 14

NEW YORK, Aug 17 (Reuters) - The International Strategy & Investment (ISI) Group Inc. said its weekly company survey index fell to
49.4 in the week ended August 14 from 53.8 in the prior week.

The survey's four-week moving average also declined to a reading of 51.0 from 51.3 in the prior survey, ISI said.

''This week's broad-based declines in our surveys may be further evidence that back-end weakness is starting to affect front-end
strength,'' said Jason Trennert, a vice president of ISI.

Weaker corporate profits appear to be slowing employment growth, possibly putting greater pressure on retail sales, he added.

Trennert also noted recent volatility in the financial markets could be an additional drag on growth.

Each week, ISI surveys nearly 100 retailers, auto dealers, manufacturers, homebuilders and banks for their views on the current state of the economy. >>
