Del,

Years ago on an island way south of here I had the unenviable task of getting myself admitted to a hospital while suffering from dengue fever. There was a great deal of paperwork involved. The girl at the desk got to the box marked "religion", and I couldn't give an answer. Having just travelled 4 hrs over horrible roads with a 104+ fever I wasn't very coherent, and just couldn't think of anything to say. Finally she shouted at me "Catholic or Protestant"? I said the latter. Should have added "purely in the sense that I protest", because for the next 4 days I had to endure visitations from a pastor who was more obnoxious than the virus. Wonder what would have happened if I'd said "Muslim".

Much later I lived in a town frequented by Jehovah's witnesses, who had the irritating habit of approaching and preaching to anyone seen idling in the park. Since I often took my son and friends to the park and idled while they played, this got irritating, until by dumb luck I fell into the answer. One day they came up and began, and I smiled my sweetest smile and told them "I'm so sorry, but I'm a satanist". Said it in Tagalog, in which it sounds better. Word must have gotten around fast, because they never came near me again.
